University of the Cordilleras Receives P17.1-M DOST Grant for Techno-Business Projects

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has selected UC as one of its grantees for Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Technoprenuership (HEIRIT) Program. DOST recognizes UC Innovation and Nurturing Space (UCIANS) as partner through HEIRIT Program. This partnership strengthens UC's research exertions and community engagements.

Part of the partnership is an institutional grant of Php17.1M supporting the establishment of UC's TBI Center, development of game-based application, and implementation of Intellectual Property (IP) and Technology Transfer Policies.


UC TBI Center

The University's UCIANS Program shall serve as a driver in advancing innovation and integration of technology across all the University's academic programs.

The Innovation Center's primary goal is to contribute to the development of the Ph Startup Ecosystem. The innovation space embraces DOST's TBI program to create jobs, develop entrepreneurs, and promote partnerships in regional economic development. Among the program components are: mentoring incubatees in idea creation thru innovation, conducting of seminars and workshops on design thinking, business model canvas and pitching, initiating startup and pitching competitions, establishing network with startup enablers, and providing co-working resources.

Project Imahe Labs

With the transition on the delivery of instruction amidst the new normal, the use of emerging technologies is highly essential. An Educational Game in Chemistry for the Junior High School and Senior High School Students in Baguio City, referred to as Project Imahe Labs aims to develop mobile and virtual reality-based applications using game elements to teach Chemistry subjects. Through this project, students can simulate laboratory activities through their devices, conduct experiments and explore in a safe space, and use concepts in gaming to aid in learning the topics.

The design and development of the applications are based on the Department of Education (DepEd) curriculum guide. Further, UC is collaborating with DepEd -Baguio City and various secondary schools with strong curriculum focus on Science and Technology. It utilizes Design Thinking methodologies to ensure that the features of the project match the requirements of the secondary school students and teachers. A heavy focus on testing each level of the games shall be in placed to ensure the success and quality of this project.

Project Imahe Labs is currently in development, with a duration of two years. The project proponents are members of UC's Senior High School and TBI Center.

UC Knowledge and Technology Office (UC-KKTO)

UC is one of the top 10 qualifiers for DOST's Intellectual Property Management Program for Academic Institutions Commercializing Technologies (IMPACT) Program.

To fully equip themselves to meet the emerging tech research & development challenges involved in this undertaking, the UC Team underwent a 14-week training under the United States Agency International Development- Science, Technology, Research, and Innovation for Development (USAID- STRIDE) Program. The USAID STRIDE program's goal is to strengthen science, technology, research, and innovation capacity in Philippine higher education focusing on disciplines that contribute to high-growth economic sectors.

The UC-KTTO envisions being the leading advocate of knowledge and technology transfer services and IP management of research and project outputs that aim to solve social and community problems in the country.

The office shall be responsible on the implementation of the IP and the Tech Transfer Policies of the University through assisting the employees, students, and partners in commercializing created and developed technology. The office shall strive to contribute to the public good and further the economic development in the region.
